The university is betraying its artistic reputation and making a move toward science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The adjustment of programs, especially those relating to language and culture, shows the university displays little care for its diverse student population. Approximately 29,800minority non-white students are enrolled at the university and 54 percent of enrolled students are women. However, the university is eliminating programs that represent these students.
On March 19, the university announced to students and faculty the closing and consolidation of 85 degree programs in response to its $45 million deficit. The most significant shift was the merging of the Department of Linguistics and the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
