Homeless man on probation charged with felony shoplifting; security guard said he “popped up” in Gainesville after Marion County warrants were issued

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Finley Johnson, 50, was arrested on May 6 for possession of drug paraphernalia and has now been charged with felony shoplifting; a Butler Plaza security guard told police that he had “popped up” in the area after Marion County arrest warrants were issued.

On May 1, Johnson allegedly took a case of beer and a pack of deli chicken from Publix (3930 SW Archer Road) without paying; a Publix manager reported that Johnson left the store and got on his bicycle, but he fell off his bicycle before traveling very far and dropped the chicken and beer on the pavement. One of the beer cans exploded, soaking the cardboard case of beer. Several EMTs were nearby and tried to help Johnson, but he reportedly refused their assistance, picked up the wet cardboard case of beer, got back on his bike, and started riding away…
