Alachua County ham radio volunteers take part in 24-hour disaster simulation

NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) – Volunteers with the Alachua County Amateur Radio Emergency Service are taking part in Field Day, a 24-hour exercise that simulates disaster response.

The event began Saturday and continues through Sunday afternoon.

Amateur radio operators, also known as ham radio operators, use two-way radio systems that allow licensed operators to communicate across long distances. During Field Day, participants are operating entirely off batteries, generators and solar power while making radio contacts across the country…
