I believe the real struggle in Marion County schools is a lack of support from leaders

As someone who has worked in our classrooms as a substitute teacher, I’ve seen the ‘behind the scenes’ of the struggles in Marion County Public Schools. With the state school grades just released, the district is highlighting that 46% more local schools earned ‘A’ or ‘B’ grades. But headlines don’t tell the whole story. The reality is that the overall MCPS district grade still dropped to a ‘C.’

While our hard-working teachers and students are doing everything they can to hit those targets, the district administration continues to fail them by ignoring systemic roadblocks.

On the ground, I’ve seen how these scores are manufactured. We have talented substitute teachers who want to step up to fight the teacher shortage, but are denied classrooms because the district doesn’t want to invest the resources or funds to set them up…
