GAINESVILLE, Fla. – At the October 8 General Policy Committee meeting, the Gainesville City Commission heard an update on the remediation of the Cabot/Koppers Superfund Site; the EPA said the next phase will include removing a large number of trees.
Megan Arias, the EPA’s Remedial Project Manager for the site, showed a map of the three main areas, with NW 6th Street along the western border and NW 23rd Avenue along the southern border; she said her update would focus on the yellow and blue areas.
The site became contaminated from wood-treating operations that began in 1916 and continued until late 2009, and contaminants include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene, pentachlorophenol, certain metals, and dioxin…
