Single-Vehicle Crash Kills One on SW Williston Road in Micanopy

A single-vehicle crash on SW Williston Road in Micanopy left one person dead, and the Florida Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation. The wreck happened near the intersection of Wacahoota Road, in the heart of Alachua County, and prompted a renewed warning for drivers to slow down through the area.

The Florida Highway Patrol was responding to the fatal crash, according to News4JAX, which reported that the scene was located near the Wacahoota Road intersection in Micanopy. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office said it was a single-vehicle crash that resulted in one fatality.

No Road Obstructions, But Caution Urged

Despite the deadly outcome, the sheriff’s office reported there were no road obstructions at the scene, according to the same report. Even so, drivers were still urged to use caution as they traveled through the area while crews worked the scene. The crash investigation has since been turned over to the Florida Highway Patrol, which typically handles traffic fatality cases on state roads in the county.

A Stretch of Road With a Troubled History

SW Williston Road and the surrounding Wacahoota Road corridor have seen other fatal wrecks in recent years. A head-on crash in the same stretch near Wacahoota Road previously killed two women, according to the Alachua Chronicle. In a separate incident, a Florida Highway Patrol report detailed how a 30-year-old Gainesville woman crossed the center line on Williston Road and collided with a northbound sedan driven by a 57-year-old Crystal River woman, a crash recounted by the Gainesville Sun; both drivers were taken to UF Health Shands Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Williston Road has also been the site of other tragic collisions beyond this immediate area. A two-vehicle crash near the I-75 northbound on-ramp killed two children and injured two adults last year, as reported by the Mainstreet Daily News. Elsewhere in Alachua County, a 42-year-old Green Cove Springs man died in December after his vehicle veered off the road and overturned, with Alachua County Fire Rescue pronouncing him dead at the scene while Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigated, according to WCJB.

Where the County Stands on Traffic Safety
