Composting is a process that turns organic waste into plant food, similar to a forest’s life cycle. It’s a sustainable alternative to synthetic fertilizers and can be done in your garden. Decomposers like millipedes and fungi, along with heat and moisture, help break down organic matter into a reusable form for plants.

You can compost various organic materials. These include vegetable and fruit scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, and paper coffee filters. It’s advisable to alternate layers of fruit and vegetable scraps with plant material. This method speeds up composting and discourages rodents and other animals.

There are different types of compost bins, from sealed plastic bins with removable tops to sealed drums that can be turned easily. You can also make your own compost bin with wire mesh. A simple pile of scraps layered with plant material can become a compost pile, particularly in hot, humid areas.

Compost piles or bins should be placed in sunny areas. Sealing or turning the compost isn’t necessary but can speed up the process. A well-sealed bin can also prevent animal intrusion. After three to four months, you can remove and use the compost at the bottom of the pile or bin.
