The County Commission meeting on February 13, 2024, saw several important discussions and decisions. Communications Director Mark Sexton discussed video productions for Black History Month and the backlog of road projects on the county website. The Alachua County Historical Commission presented its annual report, focusing on its role in the Truth and Reconciliation project and research on local history.

The commission discussed health care, particularly dental health, and voted to support proposed legislation (HB-1173 and SB-1254) on dental therapy. This legislation has been adopted by 14 other states. The commission also renewed its membership in the Floridians for Dental Access due to concerns about dental health visits in Florida, especially in Alachua County.

Assistant County Manager and Chief of Staff Gina Peebles updated the commission on the oversight of the infrastructure surtax, also known as Wild Spaces Public Places. The commission decided to promote joint projects and address oversight board vacancies by sending a letter from Chair Mary Alford to the county’s municipalities.
