‘What we do at Trinity Catholic’: Celtics top PK Yonge to win district title, punch ticket to playoffs

GAINESVILLE – The losses have piled up for John Brantley this season.

Seven this season , 15 combined over the last two seasons.

One record, though, remains untouched: 34-0 in district games.

The venerable coach wasn’t about to let that end.

Brantley and Trinity Catholic defeated P.K. Yonge 37-0 Friday night in Gainesville to win Class 1A-District 4.

The Celtics will be heading to the postseason for the 12 th straight season under Brantley, despite a 2-7 record.

“That’s what we do at Trinity Catholic,” Brantley said. “We don’t have the big lineman this year that we’ve had in the past five years, but we’re making do and we’ve gotten progressively better each week.”

By records, this didn’t appear to be a contest. The Blue Wave were 5-2, and the Celtics 1-7.

And that proved true. It wasn’t a contest, but not in the way most expected.

The Celtics baffled the Blue Wave defense all night. Coach Willie Jackson said that unit had issues not seen yet this season.

Meanwhile, P.K. Yonge running back Braeden Brockington fumbled on the Blue Wave’s second drive. On the next drive, QB AJ Powers threw an interception in Celtic territory.
