GRU and City unable to find source of foul smell reported all over Gainesville

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – With 377 comments and counting on a Gainesville Word of Mouth thread about a horrible odor that has been reported “all over town,” City and utility officials are scrambling to find an explanation. The odor has been described as “dog feces” and “a dead carcass from the woods.”

On its Facebook page, GRU posted, “We have walked local creeks, investigated areas where customers have reported foul smells, and found no evidence that the odor is related to GRU’s facilities. Wastewater spills occur from time to time but are contained to small areas and don’t produce a smell that would spread to large portions of the community, as we are experiencing today. Our water reclamation facilities and lift stations are also operating under normal conditions.”

The City of Gainesville posted, “In the spirit of collaboration, our Public Works Director is reaching out to GRU and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to assist with determining the cause.”
