An overly enthusiastic Subway patron had to settle for jail food after he went behind the counter and made his own sandwich, according to investigators in Florida.
The stunt resulted in the restaurant having to throw away pounds of sandwich fixings out of concern they were contaminated, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in an affidavit.
It happened around 4:50 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, at a Subway in Fort McCoy, about a 90-mile drive southwest from Jacksonville.
The manager reports she caught the suspect in the act, and he offered no apology or explanation.
“Once confronted, the (man) exited the business with the sandwich … passing all sale points without paying,” the sheriff’s office said.
A deputy arrived within the hour and found the 21-year-old man outside the store, and he conceded to helping himself to a $10 sandwich, the sheriff’s office said.
However, he threw it in the trash outside the store, officials said.
“Due to the (man’s) actions of making the sandwich, Subway had to throw away all the food on the line due to contamination,” the sheriff’s office said.
