The Florida House of Representatives is taking on the complex issue of college athlete compensation, with a focus on name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights.
House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, announced the formation of a 21-member workgroup on Wednesday to delve into the legal, financial, and practical implications of NIL compensation for college athletes.
The workgroup, comprised of members from the Education & Employment Committee, the Higher Education Budget Subcommittee, and the Civil Justice & Claims Subcommittee, will spend the next week examining:
- Legal Rights of Athletes: The legal rights of college athletes to profit from their NIL.
- Responsibilities of Schools: The legal responsibilities of educational institutions regarding NIL activities.
- Financial Impact: The financial impact of NIL compensation on public universities.
