Alachua County park closes to protect 200-year-old tree from lightning strikes

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – A park in Alachua County is temporarily closing to protect a historic tree.

Officials with Alachua County Parks and Open Space are closing Cellon Oak Park, located at 4100 Northwest 169th Place, from April 10th to 11th to install a new lightning protection system on a Live Oak tree that’s more than 200 years old.

The tree measures more than 32 feet around and is about 91 feet high…
