Family earns new Ocala home after hundreds of volunteer hours

Habitat for Humanity of Marion County hosted a house blessing ceremony this past week for two children and their mother, who spent over 400 hours volunteering to earn the home.

On Wednesday, July 23, Habitat for Humanity passed the keys to Vanessa Mingo and her children, Peter and Savannah. According to the organization, Mingo began her journey with Habitat in November 2023.

Over the past year and a half, Mingo has completed 400 sweat equity hours, using the journey to grow “financially, emotionally, and personally.” During that time, Mingo has learned to budget, build credit, and prepare for homeownership, according to Habitat.

“I started volunteering with Habitat years ago while working toward my GED. Never knowing that one day I’d be building a home of my own through the same program. That experience planted a seed that led me here—determined to be the role model my children deserve,” said Mingo in a statement…
