Gainesville Neighborhood Voices helps neighborhoods start formal associations

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – According to Gainesville Neighborhood Voices’ Articles of Incorporation, central among the “Purposes” for the organization are these: “To enable and provide organizational support to aid neighborhood communication” and “To empower citizens of Gainesville’s neighborhoods to… protect and enhance the quality of neighborhood life while preventing or mitigating the adverse impacts of gentrification that could, if not managed, displace residents and families.”

To help achieve these goals, GNV Voices has been developing a program to help neighborhoods — those who do not already have a formal neighborhood association — to establish one if they wish. The first neighborhood in which this is happening is Porters Quarters. Over a period of several months, the neighborhood has discussed and modified a template that GNV Voices provided for the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws for what will soon be formally registered as Porters Quarters Community Connection, Inc. Volunteers with GNV Voices will be helping PQCC with the filing of the Articles and with subsequent 501(c)(3) nonprofit filing with the IRS. The hope is that this formal incorporation of the neighborhood association will help the Porters community to strengthen their already-strong voice in communications with City leadership…
