Report: GPD captain demoted, another suspended over handling of Easter Sunday event

Two Gainesville Police Department captains were disciplined following an internal affairs investigation into the permitting process for an event on Easter Sunday at T.B. McPherson Park where a nearby fatal shooting took place.

The internal affairs report, obtained by The Sun through a public records request, states that GPD Capts. Victoria Young and Summer Hallett “failed to analyze historical data and event information,” and missed “clear indicators” in the permitting process for the April 20 event billed as an “Easter Egg Hunt and Family Day.”

Events held at the park for decades have been known to draw large crowds, including many people from outside the community. City Commissioner Ed Book, who recently retired as chief of the Santa Fe College Police Department and previously served as a captain with GPD, said past events held annually at the park known as Peaceful Sundays were “anything but peaceful.”…
