Deputy Arrests Man for Abandoning Dog

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Granville Crockett Batey Jr., 42, early Tuesday morning and charged him with misdemeanor animal cruelty for the abandonment of an animal.

According to the arrest report, Deputy Sam Meyer responded to a motel located on NW 75th St. off W. Newberry Rd., where the complainant was staying. The complainant advised that an unknown man, later identified as Batey, kept knocking on her door with a dog. The complainant said Batey knocked on her door around 12:45 in the morning, and he left the location, leaving the dog behind to freely roam the parking lot.

Meyer reported that Batey returned to the location at 3:15 a.m. and that it was “apparent,” based on his “demeanor and speech, that he was intoxicated.” Meyer attempted to read Batey his Miranda rights, but he reportedly said he didn’t understand and that it was “pointless to arrest him.”…
