34 individuals killed on Marion County roadways through mid-May

Marion County roadways have claimed the lives of 34 people in the first four and a half months of this year, according to newly updated state tracking figures.

Preliminary data released by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reveals that a total of 2,202 vehicular crashes have occurred on local roads between January 1 and May 14. Those collisions have resulted in 1,880 injuries, 33 total fatal crashes, and 34 fatalities.

According to the state’s dashboard, the Florida Highway Patrol handled the supermajority of the local incident investigations, checking in at 64.31% (1,416 crashes). Municipal police departments within the county accounted for the remaining 35.69% (786 crashes)…
