For the second year running, a Gilbert Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) has snagged the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) Exceptional Service Award, a nod to those who go above and beyond for their school communities. Officer Ryan Matheson, of Cooley Middle School, has been selected out of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma, collectively known as Region 7, as the latest recipient. His commitment isn’t newfound; before his six-year tenure with the Gilbert Police, Matheson spent 16 years teaching Health and Physical Education, fostering a passion for guiding youth.
His unique approach to fostering a safe and friendly campus environment includes the basic duties, with a twist – greeting students at the door each day, patrolling the hallways, and mingling with students during their daily rituals. As he took the helm at Cooley Middle School, where he is currently positioned after his stint at Mesquite Junior High School, Matheson brought with him a philosophy that emphasizes the personal connection. “During my time as a school resource officer and as a teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how I can positively impact a teenager’s life,” Matheson told Gilbertaz.gov. “Witnessing their growth and achievements is truly rewarding.”
The NASRO award spotlights the role of an SRO as more than just a security presence; it’s about being a dependable pillar in the school community. Officer Matheson’s winning strategy? Being proactive, reciprocal interactions, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of the students. “I make it a point to interact with students daily, asking about their day, their weekend, their sports events, concerts, and families. Taking a genuine interest in their lives lets them know that their School Resource Officer is here to support and encourage them,” explained Officer Matheson, according to Gilbertaz.gov…
