Hardly anyone home: Just 2 residents evacuates as fire threatens area north of Payson

It’s “go” time for residents of a small community north of Payson, as the Washington Fire expands to 381 acres.

Gila County Emergency Management upgraded the advisory for residents of the Shadow Rim Ranch Aug. 14. It had an immediate effect: Only one resident was home, and that person left to seek shelter, said Carl Melford, Gila County’s emergency management director.

It’s a repeat of what happened Aug. 13, when the sole resident of the Mountain Meadows Ranch housing area, also known as the Mountain Rim Ranch, heeded the “go” order…
