North Phoenix neighbors frustrated after ancient petroglyphs removed

PHOENIX — For decades, neighbors in a North Phoenix community have been able to step outside their homes and see ancient carvings on boulders—until now.

O’Halloran lives just steps away from the north side of Moon Mountain, a peak within the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Walking down the path, she said she’d find at least half a dozen boulders with petroglyphs.

“My husband and I come out here every afternoon, evening, we walk our dogs out here,” she said, recalling the times they’d question who created the petroglyphs and what they meant…
