Multi-car crash causes traffic backup in Mesa; on-ramp reopens

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A crash involving multiple vehicles caused a temporary traffic backup for some drivers attempting to reach a busy East Valley freeway early Saturday morning.

The collision was reported shortly after 5:30 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the Loop 202 South Mountain near Hawes Road. Authorities say three vehicles were involved, but it’s unclear how many people were injured.

The SR 24 on-ramp to the Loop 202 was shut down for several hours as crews worked to clear the crash scene. The on-ramp reopened around 8:30 a.m.

Traffic cameras showed drivers using the shoulder to get around the closure. Earlier video showed a heavy backup as crews were moving the damaged vehicles off of the freeway…
