Sick horses prompt officials to prohibit equestrian uses along Lower Salt River

MESA, Ariz. — The presence of a virus has prompted forest officials to close off equestrian access along the Lower Salt River.

Starting Dec. 6, the Tonto National Forest will prohibit horses and donkeys from certain areas to protect them from the vesicular stomatitis virus. Forest officials said the restriction was needed after several horses showed signs of the virus.

The order shall remain in effect until March 6, 2026 unless it is rescinded earlier. Other recreation opportunities remain open…
