Kymberly Campos used to crash on an air mattress in her parents’ living room. She had tried renting a place to live, but it became too expensive.
She never thought she’d be a homeowner.
“When I first started with the company that I was at, (I thought) I can’t own a home at the pay rate that I’m making,” Campos said. “Finding Habitat (for Humanity) and knowing that they work with lower income homes was amazing.”
Campos became a third-generation Habitat homeowner last year, building her own home and those of her neighbors in Glendale.
“It’s wonderful going into your room and saying, ‘Hey, I helped put this wall up, I put every nail into this wall, I painted it,’” she said.
Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona has helped build over a thousand homes in the Valley and surrounding areas, making it more affordable to own a home.
“A lot of people will pay 50% or more for their rent here in Phoenix,” said Jason Barlow, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona. “Our average mortgage payment is under the rental cost of a one-bedroom.”
