As summer temperatures rise, a local nonprofit is calling for volunteers to step in and help homebound adults and seniors who rely on free support services that become harder to access during the Valley’s hottest months.
Duet: Partners In Health & Aging is seeking volunteers to assist homebound adults — affectionately called “neighbors” — with essential tasks such as grocery shopping and rides to medical appointments. Many of Duet’s regular volunteers leave town during the summer, leaving more than 175 adults in need of assistance.
“The summertime can be pretty tough on vulnerable older adults,” said Celeste Plumlee, Duet’s director of homebound adult services. “They rely on the support of others at the same time that a lot of our volunteers are escaping the heat. A ride to a doctor’s appointment or grocery store can have a significant impact on how our neighbors get through the day.”…
