One year ago this weekend, a shooting at a dance rocked the Gila River Indian Community, leaving a rookie police officer and a woman dead. On June 1, 2024, in the early morning hours, Gila River Public Safety Dispatch received a 911 call regarding a disturbance at a home in Santan on W. Moffett Road. The FBI says that when officers arrived, gunshots rang out. Six people were shot, including 24-year-old Officer Josh Briese and 23-year-old Alicen Apkaw. Both were killed. A second Gila River officer was seriously hurt.

A death investigation is underway after a man was found dead on a trail in Payson earlier this week. On Wednesday, the Payson Police Department received a call about a man who did not return after a hike. Police say the 74-year-old was hiking the Boulder Loop Trail.
