Avondale, AZ – A disturbing Arizona case has gained statewide attention after police reported that an 18-year-old used his mother’s Glock 43 to fatally shoot his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend, then allegedly attempted to kill her mother before fleeing the scene. The victim, Rhiana Kemplin, was found shot in the head while still in bed.
Deadly Attack Inside the Victim’s Home
According to police statements and court documents, officers responded on November 8 to an Avondale apartment where they found Kemplin with a gunshot wound to her head. Her mother told investigators that moments before discovering her daughter, she encountered a masked intruder, whom she recognized as Emilio Rivera, her daughter’s ex-boyfriend.
In her statement to detectives, she described seeing Rivera point a gun directly at her:
“He pulled the trigger twice… I heard clicking both times, but the gun didn’t fire.”…
