New survey reveals package theft affects 1 in 4 Americans

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Almost one in four Americans says they have had a package stolen from their doorstep, according to a new ADT survey.

The survey shows 24 percent of Americans have experienced package theft in the past two years. Twenty-nine percent of Americans leave deliveries unattended for at least 4 hours, and 46 percent of thefts occur between noon and 6 p.m.

Thieves becoming more strategic

“What’s interesting is what we’ve found is people more and more being unfortunately a lot smarter about how they’re canvassing a home and they’re actually doing a lot of investigation about trying to understand when is the best time to do something malicious,” said Jimmy Lin, vice president of product management at ADT.

Prevention strategies

Lin said there are simple strategies to protect packages when homeowners cannot retrieve them immediately.

“Security cameras and video doorbells are actually a great way to help deter theft,” Lin said. “Having your doorway be lit up, especially at night. There are devices that can simulate home presence so if there is a porch pirate that comes, we can actually detect that that person is there and for example play sounds of people at home to just try to deter somebody from even approaching your porch.”…
