Wyoming neighbors worried about plan for commercial development

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — A developer wants the city of Wyoming to rezone property near 52nd Street and Wilson Avenue to allow for the construction of a neighborhood commercial center.

The planning commission reviewed the proposal at a meeting Thursday. Commissioners voted in favor of denying the request, which still needs to go before the city council.

Townhomes, retail space proposed along 44th Street in Kentwood

Eight single-family homes currently sit on the 11 acres being eyed for the project. Planning Commission documents say the developer plans to market the property to attract businesses like Trader Joe’s, Culver’s and Chick-fil-A.

“I think the city, when they did their master plan, they kind of envisioned more of a local smaller market that neighbors could walk to and enjoy. I think the Trader Joe’s, it’s a great business. However, it’s a lot of high-volume traffic that would draw, and there would be economic growth there, but to the detriment of the neighborhood,” said Lisa Rizzo, who lives in the area and opposes the proposal.
