Inmate’s pleas for mental-health help ignored before suicide, lawsuit says

KENT COUNTY, MI – The family of a 19-year-old woman who died by suicide at the Kent County Correctional Facility says her pleas for help were ignored by jail staff.

Mya Carlton hanged herself with her clothing on June 10, 2025, while in solitary confinement.

“In the weeks leading up to her death, Ms. Carlton repeatedly told KCCF staff that she was suicidal and desperately needed mental health support,” attorneys wrote in a federal lawsuit…
