Aggressive driving, broken window: Court docs reveal what led up to ‘road rage’ shooting

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The man charged in a road rage shooting that shut down East Beltline Avenue last week is accused of firing several shots toward another driver who had punched his window, then following the victim and beating him unconscious, court documents reveal.

Nicholas Hofstra, 38, was arraigned Friday on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and felony firearm, court records show.

The shooting happened Wednesday afternoon. A probable cause affidavit says it began when Hofstra “was driving aggressively and cutting people off” while heading south on the Beltline. Due to traffic, Hofstra came to a stop in the left turn lane just north of 28th Street, as did a Chevrolet Camaro that was also going south.

The affidavit says that as both cars were stopped, the driver of the Camaro got out of his car and walked up to Hofstra’s Ford Focus. In “mere seconds,” the Camaro’s driver punched the window of the Ford Focus, breaking it, according to the document. He then got back into the Camaro and began to make a U-turn…
