Amid decline in cash use, Consumers Energy axes more in-person payment offices

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As the number of people who pay bills in person continues to drop, echoing a wider decline in the use of cash, Consumers Energy is closing its remaining in-person payment offices in West Michigan.

Tuesday, June 30, is the last day of operations for the utility’s Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo payment offices, which accept cash and check. After these closures, Consumers will have only two in-person payment offices left in Michigan: one in Saginaw and one in Flint, a Consumers spokesperson confirmed to News 8.

Consumers emphasized that if customers would like to pay in person, they can still do so at authorized retail locations across the state. Within 10 miles of the Grand Rapids office, for instance, there are 16 retail locations where customers can make payments.

Consumers has been shuttering offices in recent years as fewer people have been making use of them. Since 2020, payment office traffic has been cut in half, according to the utility.
