Fourth of July weekend forecast: Slightly cooler with a chance of rain

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — After extreme heat warnings during the week, slightly cooler temperatures should arrive in time for the Fourth of July.

HOT AND HUMID

After a stretch of high temperatures in the 90s, slightly cooler air will slide in for Saturday and Sunday. Highs will fall into the mid- to upper 80s with dew points hovering near 70 degrees.

During this time, heat indices will tumble back to the low and mid-90s. While it’s still important to limit time outdoors, it should be a bit more bearable for fireworks shows and barbecues.

PAST INDEPENDENCE DAYS

On average, Grand Rapids sees high temperatures in the low 80s on the Fourth of July. The record high of 100 degrees was set in 1911.

Both high and low temperatures will be above average this upcoming holiday.

Due to high humidity this week, rain chances continue to pop up into the weekend. A few storms may be able to form Friday afternoon and evening as a warm front lifts into the region.

If severe storms do form, heavy rain and gusty winds would be the top concern. A marginal risk (level 1 of 5) is in place across lower Michigan. South Haven’s “Light Up the Lake” fireworks kick off at dusk. At that time, drier air looks to win out.

Another round of showers are possible Saturday. At this time, it does not look to be enough rain to wash out firework shows then either. A few showers may linger into Sunday as well.
