Ottawa County pasture walks offer view of agriculture

POLKTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Have you ever wanted to tour a family farm that’s been in operation for more than 100 years? If so, the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development and Ottawa Conservation District have a couple of upcoming events you’ll want to add to your calendar.

On July 14, the Hehlden Farm near Coopersville will host a pasture walk as part of the Ottawa Conservation District’s Cultivating Resilience Summer Series. What was once a commercial hog operation has transitioned to raising Heritage Breed hogs, pasture-raised chickens and turkeys. Dairy cows are also on the farm during the grazing season. Most recently, the family has started raising meat rabbits.

Over the course of the walk, attendees will be able to see different field practices along with how the farm manages composting. Ximena Figueroa, a CTAP technician with Ottawa Conservation District, will show how to conduct a field soil health assessment…
