First Female Kent County Sheriff Wrapping Up A 37-year Career In October 2026

She has spent 37-years with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, the past several years as Sheriff, but the time has come to hang up her badge and gun and begin life as a private citizen.

After 37 years of service to Kent County, Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young has announced her intent to retire.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department posted on their Facebook page that October 9, 2026, will be her final day with the department as she looks forward to traveling and spending well-earned time with her family.

Sheriff LaJoye-Young has served in many areas of the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and made history as the first female Sheriff in Kent County. Her leadership, marked by professionalism, steadiness, and a deep commitment to the people of the agency and the community will be missed.
