Admission for Grand Rapids film festival is donation of recyclable cans

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — On July 17 and July 18, Wealthy Theatre will host the fourth Cans Film Festival, an annual West Michigan nonprofit festival that requires a donation of empty, recyclable cans for admission rather than a purchased ticket.

Previously held at venues like NODEHAUS Media and Four Star Theatre, the Cans Film Festival at Wealthy Theatre will include more than 15 brand-new short films and four feature-length projects over its two days of screenings.

“The mission of the Cans Film Festival is to support local, independent film by cultivating the relationship between filmmakers and their audience,” Tran Hoang Calvin, director and founder of Cans Film Festival, said in a statement. “We want to give filmmakers a unique and different opportunity to show their work, breathe life into their films and introduce them to new audiences.”

Along with screenings of Michigan-made film projects, guests can attend a free filmmaking workshop, called Making It In Michigan, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on July 18 at the Koning Micro-Cinema adjoined to Wealthy Theatre. There, attendees will hear from local artists on how to enter the filmmaking industry in West Michigan.
