GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Police Department on Tuesday responded to a city report calling for changes to its written policy on the use of police dogs, acknowledging opportunities for improvement but also defending its practices.
Addressing the city’s Public Safety Committee, Deputy Chief P.J. Baker responded to nine recommendations from the Office of Oversight and Public Accountability concerning GRPD’s dog polices. A former K-9 handler, Baker said most of those recommendations are already in practice, though they may not be directly written in the policy.
“I think the best thing that came out of this is the opportunity to take a look at that policy in depth and make sure that we are hitting what we want to hit with that policy. I’m quite confident we are in a very good place with that policy,” Baker said…
