GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The White House has lifted the work stoppage order at the Brandon Road Interbasin Project.
A spokesperson for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer confirmed with 6 News Grand Rapids sister station WOOD TV8 that she had a conversation with President Donald Trump about the project on Wednesday.
Invasive carp found closer than ever to Lake Michigan
The spokesperson said Gov. Whitmer “underscored the urgency of the moment” while talking with the president, noting that invasive carp had recently been found farther up the Illinois River than ever recorded, about 80 miles away from Lake Michigan.
“She emphasized that Brandon Road is the strongest available defense for the Great Lakes and the $8 trillion economy they support, and that continued delays also jeopardize jobs tied to the project,” the spokesperson stated. “We appreciate the president’s time and look forward to work resuming on the project as soon as possible.”
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined that the Brandon Road Lock and Dam, 27 miles southwest of Chicago, is the key containment point to prevent invasive carp from advancing into the Great Lakes…
