In 2023, Head Start for Kent County in Michigan made a decision no early childhood program ever wants to make: We reduced the number of children we served because federal funding could no longer keep pace with the cost of keeping our classrooms staffed and open. It was the only way to retain our teachers and keep the remaining classrooms stable.
That is not a choice we want to make again, but without adequate funding for fiscal year 2027, we may have to consider reducing again.
Our teachers do complex, essential work. They support children’s learning and development while helping connect families with nutrition, mental health, disability, and vital services.
