Live Studio Audience
From the 1930s through the 1950s, many radio shows were performed and recorded before live studio audiences. Comedies and variety shows relied on genuine audience laughter, gasps, and applause. Even sound effects were often created by hand, adding to the magic of the live experience.
As live radio audiences began to fade in the 1950s, people shifted to television, where they remained an important part of many shows for decades. By the 2000s, however, the tradition began to decline. The growing use of single-camera production also reduced the need for live studio audiences.
One radio show is keeping the tradition of live audiences alive, taking its show on the road to venues across the United States throughout the year.

For nearly 30 years the Free Beer & Hot Wings Show has been wowing listeners weekday mornings and for about half of those years they brought back the live show in front of an audience. After launching their live show in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the tradition has spread to several stops across the U.S. each year.
The Free Beer and Hot Wings returns to The Intersection on Wednesday, November 25, 2026. General Admission tickets are $20, while VIP tickets are $40 and include premium seating, early entry, a signed poster, a T-shirt, and access to private bartenders.
