Chem Central property declared PFAS contamination site

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan PFAS Action Response Team has confirmed there is PFAS contamination at Chem Central, a longtime manufacturing property in Wyoming.

Chem Central covers two acres on Stafford Avenue near 32nd Street. According to MPART, hazardous waste leaked into the ground through a pipe caused by a construction flaw between 1957 and 1962. That resulted in soil and groundwater contamination.

Testing conducted by MPART showed levels of PFOA — perfluorooctanoic acid — at 40 parts per trillion, well above the state’s maximum contamination level of 8 ppt. Testing also found 55 ppt of PFOS — perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. The state MCL is 16 ppt.
