UM Health-West introduces new security measures

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — UM Health-West has expanded its safety measures with the help of a new wearable device used to alert the building to security threats. It’s called Canopy Protect, and hospital leaders say they’ve already seen safety improvements since implementing the device about two weeks ago.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 20,000 workers in the private industry were victims of non-deadly workplace violence in 2020, and about 75% of those people worked in healthcare or social assistance.

“The healthcare industry is an industry in which you have about five times more workplace violence than most other industries,” Gary Gorski, director of security at UM Health-West, told News 8.
