Maggie’s Kitchen, a West Side ‘tradition,’ reopens after closure

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A beloved family-run restaurant on Grand Rapids’ West Side is back open and ready to serve the community following a temporary closure.

Maggie’s Kitchen dates back to 1983. Luis Ramirez has been there since the beginning, when his mother Magdalena Garcia launched the kitchen. Today, four generations of the family are involved in operating the restaurant at Bridge Street NW and Lexington Avenue NW.

“My mom has been cooking for all her life,” Ramirez told News 8. The space started as a grocery store, he continued, where his mother began testing out her dishes.

“One customer said, ‘You should open a small kitchen.’ And that’s the way we started, for takeout only,” he recounted. “It’s been 43 years. We have so many loyal customers through all the years and we’re so grateful that people continue to come in.”

But at the end of August, Maggie’s Kitchen announced it would be closing “until further notice” to focus on the family. Ramirez explained that his daughter ended up in the hospital and because family members are so involved in running Maggie’s, they decided to shut down temporarily…
