Grand Rapids community flocks to ‘packed’ silent disco

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As the Grand Rapids community flocked to the World of Winter Silent Disco Saturday night, attendees told News 8 they were overwhelmingly excited to be there, despite hour-plus waits.

The concept of the silent disco is simple: Dancers are given a pair of wireless headphones to use, tune into one of several DJ channels and dance the night away on an open-air dance floor at Calder Plaza. The event ran from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

While in line to join, multiple attendees told News 8 they had been waiting for around an hour.

“56 minutes,” said Almondo Anderson, who was attending the event for the first time.

“(The line) was around the block at first,” Josiah Nuest said. “We’ve been here at least an hour.”

This year, organizers added 200 extra headphones to reduce wait times, but demand was high.

“According to a lot of my new friends — they’ve been here over the years — they said this is the first year it’s this packed,” Anderson said. “It’s way more packed.”
