Family mourns man found shot dead in Kentwood

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The family of a 20-year-old Grand Rapids man who was found dead in his car over the weekend continues to grieve the loss of Martin Martinez-Ramirez.

“My brother was kind. I know everyone says that about everyone, but my brother was truly an angel,” his sister, Pilar Martinez-Ramirez, said. “He helped everyone whether he knew them or didn’t. Never hesitate(d). Didn’t care if he had to drive an hour at night all by himself.”

Man found shot, killed in vehicle in Kentwood

Martin Martinez-Ramirez was found just after midnight Saturday by the Kentwood Police Department after someone called for a welfare check near the corner of 60th Street and Wing Avenue.

“It’s not a regular occurrence so when something like that happens, we make sure we get all of the teams together to focus on it,” Capt. Tim Wierenga said.

Police are calling it a death investigation, noting the victim suffered from at least one gunshot wound.

“I don’t want people to think my brother was involved in anything. I know that’s usually the stereotype with these types of things,” Pilar Martinez-Ramirez said.
