Holland’s Own Officer Joy Nelson Honored as HDPS Police Officer of the Year 2024

The Holland Department of Public Safety – Police Services (HDPS) has awarded Officer Joy Nelson as the 2024 Police Officer of the Year. The HDPS Command Staff selected her after receiving nominations from her peers. Officer Nelson joined the HDPS as a cadet in 1998 and became a patrol officer in 2001, following her graduation from Grand Valley State University and the GVSU Police Academy.

Officer Nelson has held various positions within the HDPS, including Community Police Officer, School Resource Officer, Detective, Booking Officer, and Field Training Officer. This range of roles has given her a broad understanding of the department and the community.

Known for her positive attitude and willingness to help, Officer Nelson has built strong community ties. Her work has fostered relationships with students, local residents, and partner organizations, enhancing the department’s community outreach.

Officer Nelson’s work has earned her respect from her colleagues and the community, making her a key member of the HDPS. Her dedication to her role and the community is clear in her work.
