Man found dead after Grand Rapids house fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police and fire investigators are trying to work out what caused a house fire Friday that left one man dead.

Authorities did not release the name of the person who died Monday.

The fire sparked at the home Nelson Avenue SE near Griggs Street after 10 p.m. Friday. Emergency responders were first sent there after a welfare check request was called in to 911.

They soon found evidence of the fire and discovered the man dead.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department says the fire sparked in the kitchen. It’s unclear how long it burned before the oxygen was used up, suffocating the flames. The result was that the fire was not obvious from outside the home.

Investigators have so far said little about the victim or what may have caused the fire. They are waiting for autopsy results before releasing more details.
