‘Surreal’: Lowell cyclist wins gold at 2024 Paralympics

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two days after winning her first gold medal at her first Paralympic Games, Lowell native Kate Brim says it still feels surreal.

Brim won gold in the handcycling time trials on Wednesday.

On Friday, she told News 8 it still hasn’t sunk in.

“When I initially crossed the finish line, I did not know what my standing was, actually … and then my coach came and he congratulated me and let me know. It was so, so surprising, especially considering some of the thoughts that I was having during the race and stuff,” Brim said from Paris. “It was absolutely incredible and it still feels so surreal, like, did this really happen?”

The Paralympian said she would cherish the memories forever.

“Every single competition I go to, I just fall in love with it more and more,” Brim said. “And it’s because of the crowds that I’m around and just being amongst athletes. Every single one of us athletes are here to give it our 100% and go out there and show the world what’s possible in both sport and in life in general.”
