Grand Haven man sentenced to 5-20 years in prison for mPerks scheme

GRAND RAPIDS — A man from Grand Haven who stole and sold account information for Meijer’s mPerks system has been sentenced to up to two decades in prison.

Nicholas Mui, 22, was sentenced Thursday, Sept. 5, to 5-20 years in prison, according to WOOD TV-8 . Kent County Circuit Judge Mark Trusock issued the sentencing.

Mui pled guilty to conducting a criminal enterprise in July. He was charged by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel last December with a handful of felonies related to the theft and sale of mPerks — Meijer’s customer loyalty program — account information.

Mui obtained login credentials, unrelated to Meijer, through a data breach and cross-referenced those credentials with mPerks. He then sold those login credentials on the internet. Those that purchased the account information used point balances to fund purchases at Meijer.
