Battery plant coming to former Wyoming GM site

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — After sitting vacant for 15 years, the site of a former General Motors plant in Wyoming will soon be redeveloped.

The Wyoming City Council approved a plan last week for an automotive parts plant making battery components.

“Benteler Automotive announced that they will be building a new assembly plant to construct battery components for the Ford Transit van and from our understanding this will create 150 to 170 new jobs. It’s a $105 million investment,” City Manager John Shay said.

The property has been a concrete wasteland since the plant shutdown and was demolished.

Shay says the nearly 75-acre property is rare to find in the area.

“It closed in 2009 and so it has been vacant since 2009. The city took it over in 2011 and we eventually sold it to a group called Franklin Partners and they’ve been marketing the property for quite a few years,” Shay said.
